Smart Meters Not So Smart

Smart Meters are being installed. Once installed and time-of-use rates come into effect, you will pay:
  1. On-peak = 10.5 cents/kWh
  2. Mid-peak = 7.5 cents/kWh (what is mid-peak???)
  3. Off-peak = 3.5 cents/kWh
To the disabled, acutely ill, chronically ill, seniors receiving homecare and/or home nursing: you're screwed.

(For those not in the know, including the government: homemakers and visiting nurses usually work during the day, running laundy machines and dryers, washing dishes, bathing clients, drying clients' hair. In other words, these helpers of the infirm consume their electricity during on-peak hours.)

Interesting stuff. Time shifting electrical use away from the daytime isn't something I considered trying.
When I heard a local radio talk show host say his electrical bill was OVER $800 for 2 months, I nearly choked on my coffee. The highest bill I'd ever heard of before then was over $200 for someone who has electrical heat.

What the heck is he wasting energy on, I wondered?! The mind boggles!!

Perhaps we wouldn't have rolling blackouts and need smart meters (which apparently we don't have except my clock that needs manual resetting loses minutes occasionally during the night) if we actually talked about and educated people on how to use less electricity!
